1,193 miles…1 overnight…and so many fun moments. Our journey has started and our July is off to a great start. The boys are now begging for a vacation with these grandparents after a much too short drive north has left them craving some more fun and smiles. Our boys are lucky to be blessed with wonderful grandparents all around. Amazing people to share stories and life lessons that will carry them far into life. And on this summer’s journey, they will get to spend special time with all of their grandparents, what a wonderful gift! So many moments to be cherished…
This journey north ended with 4 hours of driving with just the boys and I. It’s not often that the boys and I get to adventure without much of a plan. We had a destination, but there wasn’t any set time or reason we needed to get there especially quickly. So, we took advantage of some time and stopped to see New River Gorge (these boys love a national park…we had done the junior ranger program here a few years ago, so we didn’t do it again). I love getting moments with these boys where we can just enjoy each other and some beautiful views! It won’t be long before their lives will be too busy to have these moments as often!
Here’s the thing, it’s no secret that I am not a Florida girl. It’s hot, it’s humid, it’s flat, there are alligators, and there are far too many palm trees. So, of course, making the drive north brings a sense of calm…peace…comfort…and home. I adore the mountains and tall trees of West Virginia. I love the cool summer nights being up north brings. And it has become blatantly obvious that our boys have similar loves…mountains, trees, and cool summer nights. They love those nights where if you don’t keep running through the grass, you will feel the chill of the air, so they just keep running and playing, chasing the moments that make summer all that it is.
Oh…and lightening bugs. I assure you no bugs were harmed in the catching and all were safely released. To see the pure joy on the faces of these boys as they ran barefoot through the yard chasing lightening bugs, it’s irresistible, I even found myself jaunting through the yard after barely visible bugs until that one moment when their little light gives you a hint of where they are! That’s the moment, the moment when little guy number three has a face that is filled with excitement and the older two boys begin their pursuit.
A challenge has been set into motion…how many bugs can you catch before you leave Pa. That challenge is amazing, not really because we need to count bugs, but because our boys love a challenge, and this one, gets them outside into the yard, running barefooted through the cool grass on splendid cool evenings, making joy filled memories…making moments last for a life time.
It’s the moments. Nothing grand…nothing special…no museums, no thrill rides…just moments with people we love that make the journey SO much more amazing!
